Perfect Day for a Zoo Trip

We had such a great day at the zoo this week, in fact, definitely my favorite visit. The lack of crowds, the weather, the enthusiasm of the littles = sublime. First of all, this was my first excursion sans the stroller. We have been lugging the deluxe, extra-wide double jogging stroller for more than two years now so this strolling about was an enormous freedom. Last time we went to the zoo, the kids were in and out so frequently I decided not to bother this time. (Plus I am trying to get the little guy as much exercise as possible). » Read more

Take it from Ross

Last night I happened to catch part of an old "friends" rerun. Say what you want about the show, I loved it, mainly because these people were going through the same stuff that I was at the same time (well, sort of...) Anyways, in this one, Ross was telling Joey about his fantasy wherein he had two kids and they would all pile on his bed and read the paper in the morning, and he was all bummed out that this wasn't happening for him. » Read more

walking in nature - and watching the tugboats

we ventured out to Kelley Point Park yesterday to take part in the Ladybug nature walks. This park is one I have never visited before - about four miles west of the Expo center on Marine Drive. It was interesting - we walked down to a beach, where we were right in the middle of some great port activity. The big cranes, the barges, and the little tugboats were of great interest to the little crew. And of course, one can never go wrong with sand, right? » Read more

Catalog City

We have been getting so many catalogs lately - the mail is a fun wonderland again. Some great stuff from old faves and some new cuties as well. Hanna Andersson, of course, has many of its classic standbys - we love those playdresses and have several in the rotation. Mini Boden - I sure covet those printed corduroys for girls, and adore the high-quality, thick cotton boys tees. A new one for me - Olive Juice. These are clothes grandma would love to see the kids in. I mean, they are super cute, don't get me wrong, but they lack ironic tee shirts or characters of any kind. » Read more

California fighting for tougher standards on fire retardant chemicals for plastic

Fire safety standards save lives. In order to stall or prevent combustion, manufacturers add various types of flame-retardants to plastic casings around TVs and computers, interiors of cars, furniture, and carpets, among other products. In recent years, brominated fire retardants have been found in the breast milk of European and American women, a troubling discovery that stimulated scientific research into the chemical properties and potential risks of these compounds. » Read more

More recalls due to lead

Great article in Salon on the regulatory conditions that allow lead to get into toys: www.salon.com/news/feature/2007/09/06/lead_in_toys/

Now that pretty much every character has been tainted in this recall-crazy season, I guess it's time for some new blood on the cartoon scene. I have heard clamors for Care Bears, but weren't those around in my day? Just like shoulder pads, I guess. All things old are new again.
