Recipe: Martha Stewart's Sweet & Spicy Pumpkin Seeds

We make these delicious pumpkin seeds every year. They are sooooo delicious!

From Martha Stewart, http://www.marthastewart.com/recipe/sweet-and-spicy-pumpkin-seeds

Pumpkin seeds must be completely dried out in the oven before combining with spices. Whether for cooking or carving, choose an unblemished pumpkin that feels heavy for its size; it will store well, uncarved, at room temperature, for up to a month.
Ingredients

Makes 1 cup

* 1 medium pumpkin
* 5 tablespoons sugar
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
* 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon » Read more

Pizza Party

iStock_000002215769Sma_opt_0.jpegBirthdays are such a magical time when we parents celebrate our child’s birth and the milestones achieved over the year. Ethan, my oldest, turned 4 at the end of June and we marked the completion of his first year of preschool. With preschool friends came lots of birthday parties so when it was Ethan’s turn, he wanted to be very involved with planning his party. I suggested we have a “build-your-own pizza party” for the kids to do as an activity. » Read more

Portland-Area Ethnic Restaurants Great for Kids

Eating out with kids often requires a bit of creativity. You want to enjoy your meal, which means you need the kids to behave well, which used to mean dining only at places that cater to kids. Ethnic dining, especially in foodie Portland, is a great alternative. The food, depending on your personal tastes, can be downright delicious, and is most likely more affordable than the big chain eateries. Plus, for the most part, you’ll find a relaxed atmosphere toward children that will help you relax and enjoy your evening out. » Read more

Recipes: Pregnancy Cravings

There is a direct correlation to your pregnancy cravings and foods that your kids will eat later. It’s true. Case in point: my two kids.

During my first trimester of pregnancy with my son, I could not eat enough salsa. I wanted it at every meal, and had to eat at my favorite tacoria at least twice a week. Four years later, Mexican is my “go-to food” for Ethan; he always has an appetite for it. When he was a small toddler, he would eat salsa until the tears ran down his face from the spice. But just like his pregnant mama, he just had to have more salsa. » Read more
