Woodhaven School

How does the following statement make you feel? “The National Institute of Environmental Health states that children today spend 90% of their time indoors.” At Woodhaven School, a passionate, non-profit managed group of teachers and parents is dedicated to changing this statistic. Tucked into Portland’s Westside, this aptly named rare gem that literally provides a “haven” for parents seeking to save their kids from the tedious, indoor world of the modern academic system. Originally established by six families in 1994, the school’s curriculum incorporates the imaginative, unhurried intelligence of childhood with the concept of nature as a respected friend and teacher, not a faraway place out the window, prohibited and neglected until recess.

The newest class offering, Forest Friends Outdoor Kindergarten program, is geared toward little ones who are 5 years old by December 31st.  Beginning with a picnic lunch outside, dedicated teachers, assistants, and parent helpers foster experiential learning for your children as they freely explore the gardens, woods and surrounding wetlands, stimulating natural curiosity and instilling the rudiments of problem solving and self-confidence. Woodhaven’s student to teacher/assistant ratio is 1:4 or better, among the very best to be found in the Portland Metro area.

From nature walks and class gardening projects, to dress up and free play, every aspect of the school day is responsibly, compassionately crafted to foster a love of education, encourage imagination and develop a sense of ecological stewardship. Escape the “polite incarceration” of standard education and protect childhood’s right to nature and freedom, with Woodhaven School.
