Pirates!

Pirates_0_0.gifArg! It's that time of year again - time for fashions of faux-eye-patches, ruffled shirts and tri-cornered hats to make a comeback. We could go on and on about the fun stuff at the
Portland Pirate Festival
– music, arts, drama and tons of other cool stuff.

Plus, your favorite kids magazine (that’s us!) will be there too. We’ll be set up with all the supplies to help you little ones make the pirate treasure chest craft from our September issue.

This year promises to be lots of fun, but the really, really, big news is that they are aiming to go down in history in the Guinness Book of World Records under, "The Largest Gathering of Pirates." And, you could be part of it, not even Johnny Depp (aka Jack Sparrow... excuse me, Captain Jack Sparrow) could say that! In order to accomplish that feat, they must recruit some 1,500 would-be pirates to deck themselves out in pirate garb. Here is the criteria:

Costumes must consist of the following:

  • Pirate style Hat or head scarf
  • An Eye Patch
  • Sword
  • Appropriate Trousers & Shirt/Waistcoat or Dress

Participants must:

  • Be old enough to sign the official Log Book (Those who are age 13 and under need an adult guardian to sign a release)
  • Agree to be photographed/video taped
  • Be gathered for a full 15 minutes after count is finished (Expect to be there for an hour or more)

Festival Nitty Gritty Details:

When: September 19th & 20th, 2009
Where: Cathedral Park in N. Portland.

Check here for list of where you can buy them ahead of time. Or, better yet, try and win ours by leaving a comment on this page. Anything goes, we’ll pick at random, but to make it fun, try and leave a comment about something pirate-y - a favorite movie or quote perhaps. We’ll pick the winners on ______.

And for those of you who still can’t get enough off these pirates, check out what one family did on their summer vacation. Too cute!

Aye Aye Cap'n!

A friend of mine clued me in to this upcoming event, we will be joining their family for sure! It sounds like overboard fun and creativity for the kids.

Love it

I love getting info on all the great festivals on NW Kids! We'll be at the Pirate Festival with our garb on!

Ahoy!

My kids would love this, we've never been! Thanks for the contest!

Argh! Ahoy Mateys....

We missed it last year because we were out of town for a last ditch family trip before my husband deployed to Iraq. My younger son is very quiet and shy, but has a HUGE love of pirates. It's one way we can get him out of his shell.
I know he would love to go swashbuckin and hang out with some ship mates!

Last year i missed it because we had a baby instead! won't miss it this year!

My 3 year old son LOVES pirates! I didn't know about this festival, but we will be sure to take him this year! I think he would love to be a part of the pirate world record!
